Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad (BSAS)
BSAS is an iconic heritage building in Kuala Lumpur, renowned for its Indo-Saracenic architecture and its significance role in the history of Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia. Comprised of 2 buildings, Block 1 is the original main building whereas Block 2 is constructed as an extension and was previously known as Bangunan Pejabat Pos Besar Lama (the Old General Post Office).
BSAS Block 1
Named in honour of the 5th Sultan of Selangor, H.H. Sultan Sir Abdul Samad ibni Almarhum Raja Abdullah (r. 1857–1898), BSAS is a landmark of historical and architectural significance in Kuala Lumpur.

BSAS was originally referred to as the New Government Offices when it was constructed and was later renamed as the Federal Secretariat. It served as the headquarters for Federal Government departments and the Selangor State Government. In the mid-1970s, the Selangor State Government relocated to Shah Alam (the new administrative capital of Selangor), following Kuala Lumpur's designation as a Federal Territory in 1974.

The Federal Government continued to occupy the building until the early 1980s, after which it remained largely vacant following the relocation of government offices to other locations.

In 1984, the Supreme Court of Malaysia (later known as the Federal Court and the Court of Appeal) took over the building after extensive renovations. This continued until 2003, when the Federal Court and Court of Appeal moved to the newly established Palace of Justice (Istana Kehakiman) in Putrajaya.

Between 2007 and 2008, the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage (now the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture) became BSAS’ custodian.

The building remains a beloved icon, frequently serving as a backdrop for significant national events and prominently featured in various printed materials, underscoring its enduring popularity and importance in Malaysia’s cultural landscape.

BSAS Block 2
Constructed on the adjacent side of BSAS Block 1 as an extension to meet growing space requirements, Block 2 is a distinguished colonial-era National Heritage building that stands as a testament to the evolution of Malaysia’s postal services.

Serving as the city’s main General Post Office until 1985, it was a central hub for communication and community interaction before operations transitioned to the modern Dayabumi Complex.

Architecturally, the building blends with its surrounding colonial-era structures. Its unplastered brick façade, adorned with intricate plasterwork and featuring British Raj and Mughal eclectic designs, showcases the architectural style of the British Colonial Administration. This harmonious design not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also preserves the historical character of the area.

In 1990, BSAS Block 2 was repurposed to house the High Courts, Judges' Chambers, and Court Registry offices. The Court of Appeal began partially occupying the building in 1994, further cementing its role in the city’s judicial landscape. The courts eventually relocated to the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya in 2003, after which the building came under the management of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture until 2023.

Today, it remains an iconic symbol of Malaysia’s rich historical and architectural heritage. Its preservation ensures that future generations can appreciate the architectural grandeur and historical significance of this building.

Rejuvenation Efforts
BSAS Block 1 & Block 2 are currently undergoing restoration and revitalisation to emerge as a vibrant landmark in the Civic Precinct. Beyond incorporating gallery and retail spaces, BSAS is envisioned as a symbol of pride and inclusivity for both Malaysians and visitors alike.

Through thoughtfully curated activities, versatile space utilisation, and content that honours its national heritage, BSAS will become a cornerstone of the Warisan KL.

Set to open in 2026, the rejuvenated BSAS will not only preserve its historical significance but also foster an environment where creativity and cultural expression can thrive, aligning with Downtown Kuala Lumpur’s broader vision to establish itself as a leading hub for creativity and culture in the region.

This initiative is supported by Khazanah Nasional Berhad in collaboration with its wholly owned subsidiary, Think City.
